Is AI reception safe to use under AHPRA rules?

Answering calls and booking appointments is administration, not advertising, and AHPRA's advertising rules do not prohibit a clinic using AI for it. The risk arrives with outbound messages: recalls, re-engagement and marketing sent at scale are advertising a regulated health service, so the wording rules (no testimonials, no misleading claims, no unreasonable expectations of benefit) apply to every automated message just as they do to an Instagram caption.

The practical answer: automate freely, and put a check between the draft and the send. That is exactly why Routiq pairs Robyn with Abby, which checks outbound wording against published AHPRA advertising guidance. It is not legal advice; it is a systematic second set of eyes.

Where automation meets the advertising rules

Section 133 of the National Law governs advertising of regulated health services. It does not care whether a human or a machine wrote the message. A testimonial in an automated SMS is still a testimonial. An offer without clear terms is still an inducement. Scale makes wording mistakes bigger, not smaller.

Questions to ask any vendor

Where does message wording come from, and can you review it? Does anything check outbound content against Australian guidance, or is that left to you? What is logged, so you can show what was actually sent if asked?

Most tools in this category are built overseas and have no AHPRA concept at all. That does not make them unusable; it makes the checking your job.

Quick answers

Can AI answer clinical questions?

It should not. Good clinic AI declines clinical questions and routes them to a practitioner. Ask any vendor to show you exactly what happens when a caller asks a clinical question.

Does Abby make my marketing compliant?

No tool can certify compliance. Abby flags wording that may sit outside published AHPRA and TGA guidance and suggests calmer alternatives, before it goes out. Final responsibility stays with the practice, as it always did.
